Narrow Your Field of Vision

While driving to church one day, I was having a difficult time seeing the road because it was snowing so hard. I was afraid I was going to go off into the ditch, so I started praying in the Spirit.

While I was praying, He said, “Narrow your field of vision.” So, I dropped the sun visor down, and I was then able to see the tracks of the other cars well enough to get me safely to church.

This experience made me think of our relationship with the Lord.

When we take our focus off of Him, we have a difficult time seeing where our life is going. We get caught up in the cares of the world, consumed with everyday life, and before we realize it, our prayer life and time spent with Him have fallen by the wayside.

Under-Emphasizing That Which is Needed

Martha welcomed Jesus into her home. She had a sister named Mary who sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His Word (Luke 10:38-39). But, Martha (desiring to become the perfect hostess) became distracted and worried, under-emphasizing the importance of that which was needed (Luke 10:40).

Martha’s intentions were honorable, but in her worried and troubled state, she focused on wrong, unimportant things, dishonoring Jesus’ presence and purpose.

Mary’s focus was on what Jesus had to say. Her concern was to be the perfect disciple.

Like Martha, many Christians today become worried, troubled and distracted with less important things and under-emphasize the importance of that which is really needed, which is Jesus’ presence in our lives.
