As a result of their disobedience to God’s command, Adam and Eve hid and sewed leaves for coverings to hide their guilt. They were spiritually changed and their intimacy and life with God was forever changed. Rather than running into His presence, they ran away from Him.
We also have coverings and hiding places that filter His voice and shield us from God’s presence. Our defensive mindsets, rationalization, emotions and traditions can keep Him at a distance for fear of what He might see, say and ask us to change.
One of the leaves we hide behind is the guilt of past or present mistakes. Rather than turning to Him and His Word, we run away and hide behind our guilt, which breeds contempt and ugly attitudes.
1 John 1:7 gives us our remedy: “If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.” As does John 8:31-32, “If you hold to my teachings, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.”
Another covering we might hide behind is a deep root hurt from our past. Pretending all is well (or wearing masks) keeps God at arm’s length. We need to take off our masks and surrender to His undying love.
I encourage you to become open-faced before God and let His love, mercy and grace melt away the pain and heal you.
