learning patience in confusion

middle-school-youth-pastorI moved to East Jordan last December from Grand Rapids to follow God’s call on my life. I knew He was calling me to Harvest Barn Church about a year before He gave me the “go-ahead” at the Women Alive Conference in 2010. As soon as I heard Him say, “It’s time,” I became very excited to make the move and continue in His will for my life.

Since I moved here, God has been leading me to James 1:2-4:

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But, let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”

He brought me here every day.

I had always thought that I was a fairly patient person, so being directed to this scripture day after day got a little frustrating, to say the least. Each day I would pray that God would give me the wisdom and guidance to understand where I could apply that in my life. I frequently wondered what it was I was continually missing.

Finally, after several weeks, I was asked to start leading the middle school youth group (ages 10-13) – a youth group this church has not ever had before. Immediately, I knew two things:

  1. That this was the place God had prepared for me at Harvest Barn Church.
  2. And, that this was the reason He had brought me to the scripture about being patient.

Over the past few weeks of leading the group, God has really laid it on my heart to truly get to know these kids, but especially, to show them His love for them. Our first month of meeting was geared around getting to know them as individuals and letting them get a chance to know me. Then, we started digging into the Word so they could begin to really know what it meant to know Him.

I feel very blessed and privileged to be a part of helping these kids in building a relationship with Jesus, and I am excited to watch their relationships with Him become more and more intimate.
